6 factors for implementing EHRs successfully

The use of electronic health records by physicians and other health care providers has led to a number of positive improvements in patient safety over time, according to a study by the Research Triangle Institute. While this advancement in health information technology has been proven to improve the quality and safety of the patient, some are still not completely on board with this technology. What some don’t realize is that there are a number of factors that go into health information technology in order for it to sustain and perform successfully.

Here is a list of six recommendations for successful implementation of electronic health records in health care.

1. Practice successful leadership
According to Medical Practice Insider, it’s crucial that the physician acts as a powerful leader and offers support to those included in the electronic health record implementation process. If the health care provider fails to use and understand the technology, electronic health record implementation will become a difficult task for the rest of the team.

2. Choose a project manager
Before selecting a vender and signing the contract, choose a project manager to take control. This person should gather information on vendors and guide the selection process for the rest of the team. If necessary, the project manager should pull together volunteers for additional help. These people can represent different departments, such as nursing, accounting and management.

3. Share a vision
Critical care nurse Karen Fuller told Healthcare IT News that the organization should share a vision in the process and progression of electronic health record implementation.Patient safety should be the No. 1 priority. The goals and benefits of the electronic health record systems should be clearly defined and meaningful to the entire organization. Fuller suggested that organizations hold sessions to talk about their views and visions of how the health information technology can improve safety and care of the patient over time.

4. Gather committed resources
All of the company’s resources, such as finances and technical infrastructure, should be committed to the electronic health records implementation for a long term – “this is a journey, not a destination.” Time and effort should be dedicated throughout the resources to provide planning, ongoing education throughout the company as well as a redesign in the workflow to keep everyone on track.

5. Make a realistic timeline
To successfully implement the electronic health records, it’s important to maintain a realistic timeline and list of expectations for the company. The source said it’s important to maintain momentum and enthusiasm throughout the process. Keep the pace of the implementation moving smoothly by keeping the expectations well managed.

6. Train effectively
Once the electronic health records are implemented, practice an effective communication and training plan. Make sure your strategy is targeting the right group with the correct message. Also consider providing “just in time” training, which means training just in time for immediate practice so that physicians don’t forget the material. Medical Practice Insider said training should occur on a regular basis to keep everyone up-to-date and on the same page.
