10 Apr If You Want to be Heard, Speak Up! Medical Home: Pediatric Care in an Adult Based World
For those of you who think pediatricians have no voice, I would urge you to listen more closely and to carry your passion when you speak. I had the privilege of being part of a meeting between the AAP and the NCQA to discuss making their Medical Home program more pediatric relevant and friendly. I learned a lot. For example, did you know that 18% of practices that achieve NCQA-PCMH recognition are pediatric? We matter to their business model. We can be heard.
Did you know that 43% of ambulatory visits for adult patients are related to chronic diseases while only 2.5% are for preventive care? Contrast that to pediatric visits where 33% are for preventive care, 17% are for chronic diseases and 47% are related to acute conditions (for you math wizards noticing the numbers don’t quite add to 100, the rest are for pre and post-surgical care). No wonder we are struggling to figure out how we fit in the PCMH model!
It seems that this is a recurring theme for pediatricians. We, like our patients, sometimes think no one is listening to what we have to say. But if we find the right place to have the conversation with the right audience, we have powerful things to contribute and people do listen. It’s one of the reasons I love being Medical Director of Office Practicum. Pediatricians have a voice which is valued and heard, in a venue that can effect change. I look forward to helping other practices take advantage of the medical home functionality in OP*, and to helping the “adult, patient-focused” world (including the organizations that create the medical home standards) understand that just like kids are not little adults, our technology solutions are not just a small version of the grown-up programs.
* Did you know that Office Practicum now offers a quality improvement module to help gather metrics that are required for Medical Home certification? If you plan on applying for Medical Home certification, you will want to buy this very important module for your OP EHR.
